Is Chiropractic Painful? What You Need to Know Before Your First Adjustment

Patients often come to me in pain, seeking relief and guidance. After discussing their symptoms, performing an evaluation, and possibly taking x-rays, I diagnose the patient’s condition. At this point, I explain the situation and discuss treatment options, as well as the expected timeline for recovery. Before beginning any treatment, I always make sure to ask if there are any questions, and one of the most common ones I hear is, “Does chiropractic hurt?”

Why Do People Think Chiropractic Hurts?

Many of my new patients have never visited a chiropractor before. They are often encouraged by friends or family members who have had great success with chiropractic care. However, their decision to seek help is often accompanied by some anxiety—mainly due to fears fueled by misconceptions. Misinformation, sometimes from the media or entertainment, can portray chiropractic care as an intimidating or even dangerous process. These exaggerated portrayals can understandably lead to some nervousness.

However, I commend my new patients for coming in for care despite any initial fears, and I work to put their minds at ease. The truth is, chiropractic care for neck and back conditions is one of the safest and most effective treatments available. After a thorough evaluation and assessment of the patient’s condition, I carefully determine if chiropractic manipulative therapy (also known as “adjustments”) is the right approach. Any additional health concerns are also taken into account to ensure that the patient’s overall well-being is protected.

What Does a Chiropractic Adjustment Feel Like?

When I perform a chiropractic adjustment on the neck, I use my hands to move a vertebra back into its optimal position, allowing it to function better. You may hear a “pop,” which occurs because of bone conduction of sound. This popping sound, referred to as a “cavitation,” happens when a vacuum is created within the joint. It’s important to note that nothing is “breaking” or “snapping”—it’s simply the movement of the joint, which is designed to shift.

When working on the upper or lower back, you may hear a similar click, although it won’t be as loud as the sound heard when adjusting the neck. While some patients might feel a slight twinge of discomfort during the adjustment, the sensation is generally very mild and is usually followed by a pleasant feeling of relief as the joint begins to move more freely. Additionally, spinal adjustments trigger the release of endorphins, which naturally help to alleviate pain.

In rare cases, if there’s significant swelling or muscle spasm, the adjustment might feel a little more uncomfortable, but typically, it’s no worse than pressing gently on sore muscles. My goal is always to use the most comfortable technique available to correct the joint dysfunction and bring you relief.

Ultimately, chiropractic care is about healing and improving function, not about causing pain. If you’re still unsure about chiropractic treatment, I encourage you to give it a try and see the relief for yourself.
