Overcome Herniated Disc Pain With Chiropractic Care: Proven Results

A herniated disc, sometimes called a slipped disc or ruptured disc, is one of the most common causes of lower back pain, sciatica, and radiating leg pain. It occurs when the soft, gel-like center of an intervertebral disc pushes through a tear or weakness in its outer layer. If the displaced disc material irritates or compresses a nearby spinal nerve, it can cause pain, numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, or changes in sensation that extend beyond the lower back and into the buttock, leg, or foot.

Herniated discs most commonly affect the lumbar spine, although they can also occur in the neck. Symptoms may develop suddenly after lifting a heavy object or twisting awkwardly, but they often result from gradual age-related disc degeneration combined with repetitive stress on the spine. Risk factors include physically demanding work, poor lifting mechanics, smoking, excess body weight, prolonged sitting, and a family history of disc problems.

Although the diagnosis can sound alarming, surgery is not the only option. Research continues to show that many people with lumbar disc herniation experience significant improvement through conservative treatment. A 2014 study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics followed 148 adults with MRI-confirmed lumbar disc herniations who received chiropractic spinal manipulation. Nearly 70% reported improvement within two weeks, approximately 80% experienced substantial relief after one month, and more than 90% improved after three months. At both the six-month and one-year follow-ups, approximately 88% of participants continued to report meaningful improvement. These findings highlight the potential benefits of evidence-based conservative care for appropriately selected patients.

How do you heal a herniated disc?

Most herniated discs improve without surgery. Treatment focuses on relieving pressure on the affected nerve, reducing pain, and restoring normal movement. Depending on your condition, treatment may include:

Recovery varies from person to person, but many individuals notice steady improvement over several weeks or months with conservative care.

Is herniated disc pain permanent?

No. Most people with a herniated disc experience significant improvement over time. As inflammation decreases and the irritated nerve begins to recover, pain often becomes less severe. While some individuals may experience occasional flare-ups, maintaining good spinal health, staying active, and following a rehabilitation program can help reduce the risk of recurring symptoms.

What causes a herniated disc?

A herniated disc develops when the outer layer of a spinal disc weakens or tears, allowing the inner material to protrude outward. This may occur because of age-related degeneration, repetitive lifting, sudden twisting movements, traumatic injuries, or years of repetitive stress on the spine. Smoking, obesity, physically demanding occupations, and genetic factors can also increase the likelihood of developing a disc herniation.

Will a herniated disc heal on its own?

Yes. Many herniated discs improve naturally as the body gradually reduces inflammation and, in some cases, reabsorbs part of the herniated disc material. Although the disc itself may not completely return to its original shape, symptoms often improve considerably with appropriate conservative care and guided rehabilitation.

At Cole Pain Therapy Group, our treatment approach is designed to help you move with less pain while supporting your body’s natural recovery process. Depending on your symptoms and examination findings, your care plan may include chiropractic adjustments, therapeutic exercise, rehabilitation, electrical stimulation, and individualized home exercise recommendations to reduce nerve irritation, improve spinal mobility, and restore function. We also provide guidance on posture, lifting mechanics, and everyday movement strategies that can help reduce stress on the spine and lower the risk of future flare-ups. If your symptoms indicate the need for advanced imaging or referral to another healthcare provider, we’ll help ensure you receive the appropriate next level of care.
