Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a rapid back-and-forth movement of the head and cervical spine, which can strain or injure muscles, ligaments, tendons, joints, and other surrounding tissues. Motor vehicle collisions are a common cause, but whiplash can also occur after falls, sports injuries, workplace accidents, or other sudden impacts.
Symptoms do not always appear immediately after an injury and can extend beyond the neck. Neck pain, stiffness, reduced range of motion, and headaches are common, while discomfort may also spread into the shoulders, arms, upper back, or upper chest. The severity and combination of symptoms can vary depending on the structures affected and the force involved in the injury.
Whiplash treatment depends on the patient’s symptoms, physical findings, and stage of recovery. In many cases, conservative care combines appropriate movement, therapeutic exercise, mobility work, symptom management, and hands-on treatment to restore cervical function and gradually return to normal activities rather than relying on prolonged rest alone.

Common whiplash symptoms include neck pain, stiffness, reduced range of motion, and headaches that may begin near the base of the skull. Pain can also extend into the shoulders, arms, upper back, or upper chest, and certain neck movements may aggravate symptoms. Because the effects of an injury can vary, symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness, significant dizziness, vision changes, or worsening neurological problems should receive appropriate medical evaluation.
Whiplash treatment may include gentle activity, therapeutic exercise, stretching, mobility work, and appropriate hands-on care based on the patient’s symptoms and stage of recovery. Ice may help manage discomfort during the early period after an injury, while heat may be useful later for muscular tightness. Chiropractic manipulation or mobilization and other conservative therapies may also be incorporated when clinically appropriate, but passive treatment is generally most useful when combined with an active rehabilitation program designed to restore neck function.
Gradually returning to appropriate activity is generally an important part of whiplash recovery because prolonged inactivity can contribute to stiffness and reduced function. Movement should be progressed according to symptoms and individual tolerance rather than forcing painful activity. A customized exercise and mobility program can help restore cervical range of motion, rebuild muscle function, and prepare the neck for everyday demands as recovery progresses.
Not every whiplash injury can be prevented, but proper vehicle safety measures may help reduce the risk or severity of neck injury during a collision. Wearing a seatbelt and correctly positioning the vehicle’s head restraint are important precautions. The restraint should be positioned close to the back of the head, with its upper portion approximately level with the top of the head, to help limit excessive head movement during an impact.
At Cole Pain Therapy Group, our doctors evaluate how a whiplash injury has affected cervical joint function, neck mobility, muscular control, and your ability to perform normal activities. Rather than treating every neck injury the same way, care is guided by your examination findings and stage of recovery. When appropriate, chiropractic care, manual treatment, therapeutic exercise, and mobility work can be combined to address musculoskeletal limitations and progressively restore function following a car accident or other sudden neck injury.
