Meralgia Paresthetica, also known as Bernhardt-Roth Syndrome, is a condition where a nerve in your thigh, called the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN), becomes compressed. This nerve is purely sensory, meaning it controls the sensation in your thigh and nothing else. When this nerve gets trapped or squeezed, it causes a burning sensation, tingling, or numbness that can be quite uncomfortable and sometimes even painful.
This condition is common in middle-aged adults, especially those with certain risk factors. If you’ve ever felt a tingling sensation or burning pain on the outer side of your thigh, it could be Meralgia Paresthetica.

The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve runs through the pelvis and passes under the inguinal ligament (the ligament in your groin area). When something presses on this nerve—whether it’s tight clothing, excess weight, or even a tool belt—it can become irritated and cause those unpleasant sensations.
This condition is more common in diabetics, who are nearly six times more likely to develop it. It can also be linked to recent weight gain (sometimes more than 15 pounds) or even things like pregnancy. Certain sports activities, like soccer or gymnastics, or positions where you’re lying on hard surfaces for extended periods can also trigger Meralgia Paresthetica.
Men are more likely to develop this condition than women, and it can occur in both legs in about 20-25% of cases.
The hallmark symptom of Meralgia Paresthetica is a burning or tingling pain on the outer side of your thigh. This pain can vary in intensity from mild discomfort to something that really bothers your daily life. You might notice that it gets worse when you walk or stand for long periods, but it often feels better when you sit down because it reduces pressure on the nerve.
Other common complaints include:
Paresthesia (a “pins and needles” feeling)
Hypersensitivity (feeling like your skin is overly sensitive)
Pain that may interfere with sleep or daily activities like exercising or even sitting.
In some cases, tight clothing or belts can make the symptoms worse. If you’ve ever worn skinny jeans or a tool belt and felt discomfort, that could be a sign of this condition.
If you’re feeling pain or discomfort in your outer thigh, a doctor or chiropractor will start by asking about your medical history and risk factors, such as whether you have diabetes, recent weight gain, or wear tight clothing regularly.
During the clinical exam, the doctor will gently press on specific spots around your groin and thigh, especially near the inguinal ligament. They may also perform special tests like the Pelvic Compression Test, which is very effective in diagnosing Meralgia Paresthetica. This test helps determine if the inguinal ligament is pressing on the nerve and causing your symptoms. It’s a simple test where the clinician applies a gentle pressure on the upper hip to see if it relieves the pain.
Most people with Meralgia Paresthetica can find relief with conservative treatments—meaning non-surgical options that help remove the pressure on the nerve. Here are some simple steps that can help you feel better:
Wear looser clothing: Tight jeans, belts, or waistbands can make the pressure on the nerve worse. Consider switching to more comfortable clothes.
Lose weight: If you’re overweight, even a small amount of weight loss can reduce pressure on the nerve.
Avoid aggravating activities: If certain exercises or activities cause pain, try to rest and avoid them until you feel better.
Physical therapy: Stretching and strengthening the muscles around the nerve (especially the hip flexors, quads, and thighs) can help reduce tension on the nerve and relieve your pain. Techniques like myofascial release and nerve mobilization may be used by chiropractors or physical therapists to help relieve tightness.
Ice and pain relief: Applying ice and using over-the-counter pain medications (like NSAIDs) can help reduce swelling and ease discomfort.
In severe cases where conservative treatments don’t help, your doctor may recommend a nerve block or even surgical decompression to release the nerve from compression. Surgical treatments have a high success rate, and many people experience significant relief after surgery.
Most Common Cause: Compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve under the inguinal ligament.
Tenderness: If you have this condition, pressing on the spot where the nerve emerges (just below the ASIS) will likely hurt.
The Nerve is Sensory: Since the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve only handles sensation, any motor or reflex issues suggest another underlying problem, like a lumbar disc issue.
Diabetes Risk: Diabetics are more likely to develop Meralgia Paresthetica, so it’s worth checking if you’re at risk.
Meralgia Paresthetica can be uncomfortable, but it’s also highly treatable with the right approach. If you’re dealing with burning or tingling in your outer thigh, it’s essential to pay attention to your lifestyle and habits. Wearing more comfortable clothing, losing weight if needed, and doing targeted stretches can make a world of difference.
If your symptoms don’t improve with home remedies, don’t hesitate to consult a professional who can offer more advanced treatment options.
