If you’re experiencing neck pain that travels into your shoulder, arm, hand, or fingers, you may have cervical radiculopathy—a condition commonly known as a pinched nerve in the neck. Cervical radiculopathy develops when a nerve root in the cervical spine becomes compressed or irritated, often due to a herniated disc, cervical spondylosis (arthritis of the neck), or cervical spinal stenosis. Because these nerves control sensation and muscle function throughout the upper extremities, symptoms frequently extend well beyond the neck.
Common symptoms include sharp or burning arm pain, numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, decreased grip strength, neck stiffness, and pain that worsens with certain head movements. The exact symptoms depend on which cervical nerve root is affected and the severity of the compression. Research also suggests that individuals with a higher body mass index (BMI) may experience greater pain intensity, reduced neck mobility, and increased disability associated with cervical radiculopathy.
The good news is that most cases respond well to conservative treatment. Evidence supports chiropractic care, therapeutic exercise, activity modification, and rehabilitation strategies to help reduce pain, improve mobility, and restore function. A thorough evaluation helps identify the underlying cause of your symptoms so treatment can be tailored to your individual needs while minimizing the need for more invasive procedures.

Exercises should focus on improving neck mobility, posture, and the strength of the muscles supporting the cervical spine without increasing nerve irritation. Depending on your condition, your provider may recommend gentle cervical range-of-motion exercises, chin tucks, scapular strengthening, postural correction exercises, and nerve gliding (neurodynamic) exercises. Because every case is different, exercises should be tailored to your specific diagnosis and symptoms.
Activities that worsen your symptoms should be limited while your neck heals. These may include:
Gradually returning to normal activities under professional guidance can help reduce the risk of prolonged irritation or reinjury.
The best approach is to identify and treat the underlying cause of the nerve compression. Conservative care often includes chiropractic adjustments, cervical traction, therapeutic exercises, nerve mobilization techniques, posture correction, and other therapies that reduce pressure on the affected nerve. Many patients experience significant improvement without surgery when treatment is started early.
Sleeping on your back or side while keeping your neck in a neutral position is generally the most comfortable for people with cervical radiculopathy. A supportive pillow that maintains proper spinal alignment may help reduce overnight irritation. Sleeping on your stomach is typically discouraged because it places the neck in prolonged rotation, which can aggravate symptoms.
At Cole Pain Therapy Group, treatment begins with identifying the source of your symptoms—not simply treating where the pain occurs. After a comprehensive evaluation, our doctors develop a personalized care plan that may include chiropractic adjustments, therapeutic exercise, electrical stimulation, soft tissue therapies, and home exercise recommendations. Our goal is to reduce pain, restore mobility, improve strength and function, and help you return to your daily activities while avoiding unnecessary medications or surgery whenever appropriate.
