The Best Headache Treatment Starts With a Diagnosis

Headaches can feel very different from one person to another. Symptoms may include pounding or aching head pain, neck discomfort, pain behind the eyes, nausea, or sensitivity to light and sound. Some episodes are occasional and short-lived, while others become frequent enough to interfere with work, sleep, exercise, concentration, and everyday activities. When symptoms continue to return, finding the right treatment starts with understanding what type of headache you have and what may be contributing to it.

Some headache patterns are associated with problems involving the joints, muscles, and movement of the neck. Previous injuries, prolonged positioning, repetitive work, physical strain, and muscular tension can affect structures in the cervical spine and sometimes produce discomfort that extends into the head. The jaw may also be involved in certain cases. However, headaches are complex, and other factors such as hormonal changes, medications, disrupted sleep, environmental exposures, dietary triggers, and underlying health conditions may need to be considered.

Because migraines, tension-type headaches, cervicogenic headaches, and other disorders can share similar features, symptoms alone do not always reveal the source. A detailed history can help identify patterns such as when episodes occur, where they begin, how long they last, what makes them better or worse, and whether other symptoms appear at the same time. A physical examination may assess the head, cervical spine, jaw, range of motion, muscle function, and neurological findings.

Not every patient needs advanced testing. When the history and examination suggest that further investigation is appropriate, MRI, laboratory testing, or referral for medical or neurological evaluation may be recommended. Establishing the diagnosis first allows treatment to be directed toward the factors identified rather than taking the same approach to every headache.

How are headaches diagnosed?

Headache diagnosis usually begins with a detailed medical history and physical examination. Your healthcare provider may ask about the location, frequency, duration, severity, associated symptoms, and possible triggers of your episodes. Additional testing is not necessary for every patient, but imaging, laboratory studies, or specialist evaluation may be recommended when the findings warrant further investigation.

Can neck problems cause headaches?

Yes. Certain headaches can originate from or be influenced by structures in the cervical spine. Joint dysfunction, restricted motion, muscular tension, or previous neck injuries may produce pain that is experienced in the head. Determining whether the cervical region is actually involved requires an examination rather than relying on the location of discomfort alone.

How are recurring headaches treated?

Recurring headaches are treated according to the diagnosis and individual factors involved. When a musculoskeletal component is identified, conservative care may include spinal manipulation, massage, dry needling, therapeutic exercise, or postural strategies. Other headache types may require different management, which is why establishing the source before choosing treatment is important.

What lifestyle changes may help with headaches?

Helpful changes depend on your individual headache pattern and triggers. Regular moderate exercise, adequate sleep, stress management, frequent position changes during prolonged tasks, and avoiding activities that repeatedly strain the neck may be beneficial. Keeping a headache diary can also help reveal possible associations with foods, environmental exposures, sleep patterns, daily activities, or other factors that can then be discussed with your healthcare provider.

At Cole Pain Therapy Group, we start by working to identify the type of headache and whether musculoskeletal factors are involved before recommending care. Our doctors consider your symptom pattern, cervical and jaw function, previous injuries, and relevant lifestyle factors to guide an individualized approach, which may include chiropractic treatment, massage, dry needling, therapeutic exercise, or other appropriate strategies, with referral for medical or neurological evaluation when necessary.
