Dry needling is a therapeutic technique that involves inserting a thin needle into the skin to stimulate specific points in the muscle known as trigger points, or muscle knots. It is used to help manage neuromusculoskeletal pain and movement dysfunction. The technique goes by several names, including “intramuscular stimulation,” “functional dry needling (FDN),” and “trigger point therapy,” which reflects how many ways it is applied to musculoskeletal pain and movement disorders.
The origins of dry needling go back to a time when medications and injections were not the preferred treatment. In the early 1900s, researchers began documenting the connection between tender muscles and orthopedic issues, and through the 1930s and 1940s their studies identified pain referral patterns that start in muscular trigger points. In 1940, Dr. Karel Lewit, known as the father of manual medicine, demonstrated that inserting a “dry” needle provided greater therapeutic benefit than injecting medications.
Over time, the technique evolved. The original “dry” hypodermic needle was replaced with the smaller, more precise needle used in practice today. That refinement is a big part of why dry needling is now discussed as a targeted option for muscle pain rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Although both therapies use needles, they are fundamentally different in their goals, practices, and applications. Acupuncture is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and focuses on balancing the body’s “chi,” or energy flow. It is often used for conditions like anxiety, insomnia, and fibromyalgia, with sessions lasting 15 to 30 minutes. Dry needling, in contrast, is a targeted treatment designed for musculoskeletal issues such as muscle pain, joint problems, and nerve-related conditions.
As with any medical treatment, dry needling can have side effects, but it is generally considered safe. Side effects are typically mild and may include insertion pain, temporary muscle soreness, fatigue, or bruising, and only 1 to 10% of patients experience them. People with needle phobias, metal allergies, vascular diseases, pregnancy, or bleeding disorders should consult their healthcare provider before treatment. Discussing any concerns or pre-existing conditions with your doctor is essential to understanding the risks and benefits for your specific needs.
Dry needling is used for pain conditions that result from movement dysfunction, including headaches, neck pain, back pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, and other musculoskeletal issues. It focuses on deactivating trigger points, the tender knots within a muscle that often cause referred pain elsewhere in the body. For example, a person with pain down the leg may have a trigger point in the hip. When a needle is inserted into the trigger point, a muscle twitch occurs, which releases tension and helps the muscle relax.
